Justin Trudeau's mandate letter to DFO Minister Hunter Tootoo sets a bar we haven't seen in this country for a long time. Of course is it early days yet and how Mr. Tootoo interprets his marching orders will decide much. However, there is much here to be hopeful about. Read the full letter here.
Fur Institute of Canada and the Bruce Williams Foundation (BWF) have selected Frances as the 2015 recipient of the BWF Research Grant. The selection committee recognized Frances' broad spectrum research agenda focusing on numerous dimensions of anthropogenic impacts on Alberta mesocarnivores, especially fisher, as being particularly worthy of support. A brief of France's PhD research can be found here.
Natalie Ban and JPV will combine the individual strengths of social and natural science in addressing to what extent fishing has altered marine ecosystems on BC's central coast, with specific interest in rockfish and lingcod and the extent to which marine protected areas might offer benefit. A research cruise from Victoria aboard the Jolly Seber is planned for summer 2015. The presser is here.
The 9th Annual Pizza Slapdown is in the books and will go down as one of the best ever. The Yule Goats were the victors with their pizza featuring BC mountain goat with a curry flair. This year's theme was "Reenacting a scene from your favorite Christmas movie with a pizza in a starring or supporting role". Well deserved second place went to the Wisemen/Saviours for their recreation of the birth of Jesus that was as creative but more tasty than the original story. Big thank you to this year's judges, sommelier Brooke Fader and chef Oliver Kienast as well as Chanda and Team Basil (and helpers) for this year's fermentation project - Saanich Cider!.
